Design Elements

Design Elements include space, colour, line, shape, texture, and form.

Space is the area around and between objects. The space around objects is referred to as "negative space". "Positive space" is the subject or object. Space is 3-dimensional and when we create the illusion of depth in visual artworks, we call it space.

Colour is light reflected off of objects. Colour has 3 components: hue, value and intensity. Hue is the common name of the colour (red, yellow, blue). Value is how light or dark the colour is. Intensity is how bright or dull the colour is or seems. There are primary, secondary and tertiary colours.

Lines are straight or curved and are longer than they are wide. Edges of shapes can form lines but the continuous movement of a point along a surface can also form lines. Lines are the basic component of a shape. Lines and curves are the building blocks of two dimensional shapes. There are curved lines, horizontal lines, vertical lines, diagonal lines, zigzag lines, waved lines, parallel lines, and dotted lines.
