Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch painter who focused on post-Impressionism. His paintings had vivid colour, thick brushstrokes and had an emotional impact on the viewer. He began painting in his late twenties however most of his most well-known paintings were painted in his last years. Over the duration of his career, he created 900 paintings and 1100 drawings and sketches.
The ironic part is that he died relatively unrecognized but his fame grew after his death. Today, he is known as one of the greatest contributors to the beginnings of modern art.

His early work consisted of gloomy earthen tones but became more and more vividly coloured. His mental illness was sometimes shown in his paintings.
